At the 6th Extraordinary Meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), the procedure for percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage was approved for inclusion in the ANS list of procedures.
Being included in the ANS list means that a specific procedure, treatment, or medication has become mandatory coverage under health plans in Brazil. This ensures that health plan beneficiaries can access these services without additional costs, in accordance with the guidelines established by the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS).
In due course, percutaneous occlusion of the left atrial appendage was favorably evaluated for inclusion in the ANS (Brazilian National Agency for Supplementary Health) list of procedures, benefiting patients with atrial fibrillation in the following situations:
- Contraindication to the use of anticoagulants.
- Treatment failure with the appropriate dose of anticoagulants.
It is worth highlighting that, whenever possible, the use of anticoagulants should be prioritized, as it is considered the "gold standard" therapy for patients at risk of embolic events.
