Scientists from UFRN invent a device with pacemaker function.

Three scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte have invented a device for transthoracic mechanical cardiac stimulation, which functions as a pacemaker.

With a patent application filed in October, the innovative device consists of a mechanical stimulator and an electronic control.

With industrial applications, the device can be programmed to stimulate at an energy slightly above the threshold, while minimizing patient discomfort caused by excessive energy. It can be used in emergency situations as a temporary pacemaker in cases of bradycardia with hemodynamic repercussions, and as an alternative to transcutaneous electrical pacing.

The new technology is now part of UFRN's portfolio of inventions, available for access on the AGIR website at agir.ufrn.br.
